The fees involved in a probate matter can vary and this will depend on the individual circumstances involved.
We offer a fixed fee where Personal Representatives ask us to obtain the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration (collectively known as a Grant of Representation) for them in simple estates, so they can then deal with the administration of the estate themselves.
Otherwise, we offer an hourly rate charging rate, whereby you will be only be charged for the time spent on the matter.
Grant of Representation only
Fixed Fee for grant of representation only basis, where the IHT205 is obligatory (the short form of the IHT Return)
£750 + VAT
Legal Fees for grant of representation only basis, where the IHT400 is obligatory (the long form of the IHT Return) for estates below £1.5m, based on 4 to 8 hours of time being spent.
£1000 – £1500 + VAT
The above fees are for applications where the Personal Representatives bringing all essential details of the assets in the estate.
Probate Legal Fees – Dealing with the whole estate
JMR Solicitors can give you the legal help you require at this difficult time and process by obtaining the Grant of Representation on your behalf and then administer the estate for you. This will be on a retainer basis and we will do the following:
- Assign a supportive and experienced Probate solicitor to work on your case
- Classify the legally appoint executors, administrators and beneficiaries
- Acquire the necessary valuations of the assets and liabilities in the estate
- Precisely identify the sort of Probate application you will need
- Complete all the relevant Probate and HMRC forms essential to make the application
- Make the application to the Probate Registry for you
- Attain the Grant of Representation
- Gather in all assets in the estate and settle the liabilities
- Conclude the deceased’s income tax affairs for the tax year to the date of death
- Allocate the estate in accordance with the terms of the Will
- Formulate a comprehensive account of the estate for the Executors and Residuary Beneficiaries
Please note: The fees specified are dependent on complexity of the case, for example, the number of beneficiaries and whether the estate includes property. Probate fees can increase, conditional on whether there are multiple bank accounts, shares and based on the number and value of any property.

Estate value of up to £50,000 without a property and up to 4 accounts (based on 5 – 8 hours of time)
£1000 – £1500 + VAT
Estate value between £50,000-£100,000 without a property and up to 6 accounts (based on 8 – 16 hours of time)
£1500 – £3000 + VAT
Estate value £100,000 – £325,000 to include a property and up to 12 investments (based on 16 – 30 hours of time)
£3000 – £6000 + VAT
Estate value £325,000 – £650,000 to include a property and up to 16 investments (based on 20 – 38 hours of time)
£4000 – £8000 + VAT
Estate value £650,000 – £2,000,000 to include a property and up to 30 investments (based on 28 – 120 hours of time)
£6000 – £25000
Estate value over £2,000,000 costs will be discussed and agreed on a case by case basis.

Disbursements costs for probate
Disbursements are costs related to your probate matter that are owed to third parties, such as Land Registry fees or court fees which we will pay on your behalf and you will see them in your final bill.
