Predictions from the Ministry of Justice show that the number of prisoners in England and Wales is anticipated to rise significantly to nearly 100,000 by 2026. At the moment the total number of Prisons in England and Wales is 78,328.
Majority of the increase is projected to come from the Government’s enrolment of 20,000 police officers as part of its pledge to reinforce law and order. It is expected that this will lead to more offenders being prisoned, with a record high estimation of 98,700 prisoners by September 2026.
Roughly around 5,000 of the upsurge is projected to come in the next 12 months due to a trial build-up caused by the coronavirus pandemic which has stemmed in offenders waiting for trial dates.
